Mithu Sen: Mothertongue

From April 21nd to June 17th, 2023, art enthusiasts, cultural aficionados, and curious minds alike had the the opportunity to immerse themselves in a world of profound artistic expression at the Mithu Sen: Mothertongue exhibition. Held at the ACCA in a bustling cultural hub, this exhibition promised to be a transformative experience that explores the complex intersections of identity, language, and creativity through the remarkable works of the New Dehil-based artist Mithu Sen. As a curious student and an art enthusiast, this was a chance I couldn't miss.

Unveiling Mithu Sen: The Artist

Before delving into the depths of the exhibition, it’s essential to understand the artist behind it. Mithu Sen, an internationally acclaimed Indian contemporary artist, is known for her thought-provoking, multi-dimensional artworks that challenge societal norms and conventions. Her diverse body of work transcends borders and navigates the complexities of human existence, particularly as they pertain to identity, sexuality, and the female experience.

Exploring the Mothertongue Exhibition

Entering the exhibition was like stepping into another world and soon I found myself captivated by Mithu Sen´s artistic prowess and her unique visual languageThe gallery space greeted me with a stunning array of artworks that explore the concept of “mothertongue” – the language spoken in one’s childhood home, often serving as a symbol of cultural and emotional connection. 

 

Mithu Sen used language as a powerful tool to convey emotions, question societal norms, and prompt introspection. Her use of words, symbols, and text challenged me to think deeply about the role language plays in shaping our identities and perceptions.

One of the most memorable aspects of the exhibition was the opportunity for interactive engagement. Guided tours and workshops allowed me to gain insights into Mithu Sen’s creative process. Hearing the artist’s perspective and delving into the stories behind the artworks added layers of meaning to the pieces I encountered, though no one could answer why Mithu Sen displays the male genitalia multiple times throughout her art. It soon became a fun activity searching for them.

 

Her art spoke to a diverse audience, transcending geographic boundaries and cultural differences. I met fellow visitors from various backgrounds. My visit to the Mithu Sen: Mothertongue exhibition was nothing short of transformative. It left me with a renewed appreciation for the power of art to challenge, inspire, and connect.
